How is Australian take-home pay calculated?

  • Resident tax rates 2026-27: 0% up to $18,200 (tax-free threshold), 15% up to $45,000 (down from 16% in 2025-26), 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000, 45% above; Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) up to $700.
  • Medicare levy: 2% of taxable income, reduced between $28,011 and $35,013.
  • HELP / HECS: 15% of income above $69,528, 17% above $129,717, then 10% of total income from $186,051.
  • Superannuation: your employer pays 12% on top of your salary into your super fund. If your offer is a package that includes super, tick the option.

Not included: Medicare levy surcharge (high earners without private hospital cover), family thresholds for the Medicare levy, non-residents and working holiday makers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the take-home pay on $90,000?

$17,520 income tax and $1,800 Medicare levy, so about $70,680 a year, plus $10,800 of super paid by your employer.

What does the 15% rate change?

The second bracket falls from 16% to 15% on 1 July 2026: up to $268 less tax a year for incomes above $45,000.

How to use it

  1. Enter your salary per year, month, fortnight, week or hour, or start from the take-home pay you want.
  2. Say whether the amount includes super: an offer quoted as a “package” includes the 12% your employer pays into your super fund, so the base salary is lower.
  3. Add salary sacrifice into super if you make one, and tick HELP / HECS debt if you have it.
  4. Read the breakdown: income tax, Medicare levy, HELP repayment, net pay per period (pay is usually fortnightly in Australia) and super paid by your employer.

“Package” or “base plus super”: read offers carefully

An offer of $100,000 “plus super” is worth $112,000 in total; an offer of $100,000 “package” is worth only $100,000, of which about $89,300 is salary and $10,700 super. The take-home difference exceeds $7,000 a year. Tick the right option in the tool before comparing two offers.

HELP repayments often surprise

Once income passes the threshold, part of it goes to repaying your study debt. Since the reform, the rate only applies to income above the threshold, which removes the old sharp cliff, but the amount is still significant on average salaries. The repayment does not reduce tax: it is a debt repayment collected with your tax.
