Typography in one click
French puts a non-breaking space before colons, semicolons, exclamation and question marks, and inside « guillemets ». The tool adds them (narrow no-break space, as in publishing, or a regular no-break space), turns straight quotes into curly ones and three dots into an ellipsis. English typography does the opposite clean-up. Times (12:30) and web addresses are left alone.
How is readability calculated?
With the Flesch reading-ease formula in English and Kandel-Moles in French: shorter sentences and words score higher. Aim above 60 for a general audience.
Is my text uploaded?
No: everything is computed in your browser. The draft is kept on your device until you clear it.
How to use it
- Paste or type your text: statistics update with every keystroke (characters with and without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs).
- Check the limits: bars show whether the text fits an SMS (160 characters), a page title (60), a meta description (155), a post on X (280), Bluesky (300), Threads (500), Instagram (2,200), LinkedIn (3,000)…
- See the reading time (at 230 words per minute) and speaking time (150 words per minute), handy for a talk or a video.
- Check readability and the most repeated words to catch writing tics.
- Transform the text: upper case, lower case, sentence or title case, extra spaces, blank lines, accents, sorting and removing duplicate lines, plus English or French typography in one click. Every change can be undone.
How to read the readability score
For English, the tool uses the Flesch Reading Ease formula: 206.835 − 1.015 × (words per sentence) − 84.6 × (syllables per word). For French it uses the Kandel-Moles adaptation. The higher the score, the easier the text:
- above 70: very easy, short sentences and plain words (mass-market press, instructions);
- 50 to 70: standard, most articles and emails;
- 30 to 50: difficult, technical or academic writing;
- below 30: very difficult, usually because sentences are too long.
The quickest way to raise the score is to split sentences longer than 25 words. The score is only an indicator: it judges neither the clarity of ideas nor spelling.
What the typography fixes do
- English: straight quotes become curly quotes (“ ” and ’), « » become “ ”, spaces before ; : ! ? are removed, three dots become an ellipsis character.
- French: non-breaking spaces before colons, inside « guillemets », and narrow ones before ; ! ?, so that punctuation never starts a line; large numbers grouped by three; a non-breaking space between a number and its unit.
- Times (12:30), web addresses and years are left untouched.
Good to know
- What counts as a word: hyphenated compounds (“well-known”) count as one, contractions as one, numbers count as words, as in most word processors.
- Your text stays private: it is analysed in the browser and sent nowhere.
- Results can be printed (text and statistics) or exported as plain text, Markdown or a spreadsheet.
